Consistent body temperature control is an important element to a good night’s sleep. There is research suggesting that most bodies respond to certain temperatures better than others, but the exact temperature for your body will depend on factors that are unique to your makeup and environment. Finding that sweet spot between hot and cold could make a drastic difference in how you sleep each night.
What Controls Body Temperature
Humans are endotherms, or warm-blooded mammals that can warm our own bodies internally. Known as thermoregulation, our temperature is controlled and maintained by sweating or shivering.
Our body temperature adapts to our environment and activities throughout the day and night, just like a thermostat in your home. A part of our brain called the hypothalamus controls this by generating and maintaining heat if the body temperature gets low or by using sweat to cool our skin when the body temperature gets too high.
Hormonal imbalances, sleep deprivation and sleep apnea are a few things that can disrupt your body’s natural thermostat and interrupt your sleep cycle.
Body Temperature During Sleep
When it is time for bed, your body temperature is warm from daily activity. It needs to drop a degree or two in order to fall asleep. Setting the room to roughly 60 to 67 degrees is a great way to begin regulating and maintaining a lower temperature, which is vital to reaching REM sleep and staying asleep. As you reach REM sleep, your hypothalamus stops regulating body temperature, so the temperature around you must stay low to keep you comfortable. Disrupted sleep can impact your overall well-being, including your physical and mental health.
Best TEMPUR-Pedic Mattresses for Temperature Control
Traditional memory foam is a favored mattress material because of the comfort it provides. Unfortunately, memory foam is an insulator that maintains heat. This conflicts with the natural temperature regulation of your body and interrupts sleep.
TEMPUR foam is not ordinary memory foam. It has an open cellular structure that promptly adapts to your weight, body shape, and body temperature. The temperature-sensitive material softens from your body heat, continuously adapts to the curves of your body, absorbs pressure, regulates body temperature and eliminates motion transfer throughout the night.
Luckily, TEMPUR-Pedic goes a step further with their newest technology, TEMPUR-CM+ and TEMPUR-PureCool comfort layers.

Choosing a Warm or Cool Mattress
Finding an ideal temperature for your bedroom and a mattress that helps control you and your partner’s body temperature isn’t always easy, especially if your preferences vary. It is extremely important, though, in order for you both to get the best night of sleep possible.
If you tend to get cold at night, this could have long-term health effects like arthritis and fibromyalgia. If you tend to get hot, this might limit your Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. REM is an essential sleep stage that affects your learning, memory and mood. Lack of adequate REM sleep over an extended period of time can lead to forgetfulness, a low libido, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
When to Buy a Cooling Mattress
If you get hot during the night, be sure to circulate the air in your room with a fan or open a bedroom window. Be sure to set your thermostat between 60 to 67 degrees and avoid alcohol, caffeine, large meals or exercising before going to bed. Try cooling accessories like a pillow or mattress protector and use sheets and bedding with natural fibers like cotton, bamboo or tencel. These are made to wick moisture away and regulate your body temperature. Try closing your curtains or blinds during the day as well to keep heat from sunlight out.
If you are still too warm at night, it could be your mattress. A cooling mattress may help regulate your temperature while you sleep and give you the high-quality rest you need.
When to Buy a Warm Mattress
If you get cold during the night, be sure to use layers of blankets and maybe even flannel sheets. Wear warm pajamas and socks and turn your thermostat up if needed, but never higher than 72 degrees. Try opening your curtains and blinds to allow the sunlight to warm the room during the day.
If you are still cold at night, make sure your mattress is not cooling you while you sleep.
