Seasonal Effects on Sleep

Spring is near and with the changing of the seasons, so do your sleep habits!

Seasonal Effects

  • Light- We all know that Daylight Savings Time affects our sleep at first, but differences in light have an effect on our bodies long term. Light is a major factor in the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep/wake cycles. As days get longer or shorter, melatonin levels fluctuate. This may make it harder to fall asleep and wake up easily. Light’s melatonin-suppressing ability means that most electronic devices these days have a special screen filter for nighttime reading.
  • Allergies- New seasons bring a very common and shared challenge: allergens that cause sleep-disrupting, itchy eyes, congestion, runny nose, and general discomfort. It’s not only just the ragweed and tree pollen that blow in through open windows and doors when the weather is nice; it’s also the dust mites, mold and pet dander that float around indoors when the house is closed up tight in the winter.
  • Room Temperature- Temperature affects melatonin and is another leading factor in sleep quality. If it’s too cold in your room, melatonin production can suffer. Raising the heat, however, doesn’t help either. A room that’s too hot is not only uncomfortable but can leave you more susceptible to colds and flu. The most beneficial bedroom temperature pegged at 60–67 degrees Fahrenheit overnight.

The Changing of Seasons and Sleep

The best way to deal with seasonal transitions is to take control of your environment. When it comes to light, temperature, and air quality, try to be consistent year-round and take advantage of today’s technologically, like blackout curtains, fans and space heaters, humidifiers, air purifiers and, of course, allergy meds.

A Mattress for All Seasons

Obviously, when it comes to battling the fluctuating temps and weather the seasons bring, a mattress that meets your body’s needs is what really makes the difference!

Latex and Memory Foam mattresses are both extremely durable and accommodating mattresses. They both regulate your body’s temperature while you sleep and conform to your body, cradling it at the pressure points.

Latex is derived from plant-based materials and is a more dense mattress than most. It’s perfect for those who suffer from chronic back pain and/or aching muscles. Made from heavy latex foam, this mattress is great for providing support and heat regulation.

Memory Foam is great for those who also suffer from back pain and other aches and pains in the body. Made from dense polyurethane foam, it’s great for providing support as well as conforming to your body. For someone who wants to feel cradles and cozy at night, this is the mattress for you!
