In 1846, Stearns & Foster was founded by businessmen George Sullivan Stearns and Seth Cutter Foster, a dealer of cotton goods in Cincinnati, Ohio. They produced cotton wadding and upholstery for horse carriages, never intending to manufacture mattresses. It didn’t take long, though, for Stearns & Foster to become one of the oldest leaders in the mattress manufacturing industry.
Stearns & Foster realized that creating an ideal luxury mattress takes time, care, and skill, so they hired only certified master craftsmen to handcraft each mattress. In 1993, Stearns & Foster merged with Sealy Incorporated and, eventually, Tempur-Pedic in 2012. All Stearns & Foster beds are built on their patented, nested, continuous-coil-within-coil design support core and are topped with high-quality memory foam and TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam materials to provide the perfect balance of comfort and support.
It takes four master craftsmen around eight hours to complete one Stearns & Foster mattress from start to finish – at least twice the amount of time it takes to manufacture other luxury mattresses. This is why every mattress is hand-stitched and hand-signed once it is complete.
