Chittenden & Eastman
In 1866, H. Bailey and Company, a retail furniture business, was formed on the banks of the Mississippi River in Burlington, Iowa. Henry W. Chittenden, a former traveling salesman, decided to join the company in 1875, and helped introduce the Square Brand mattress to the world in 1880. This became known as the cleanest, healthiest and most luxurious mattress made.
In 1883, Chittenden decided to take charge of the company. He teamed up with P. Eastman, a young bookkeeper, to form what today is known as Chittenden and Eastman. By the 1900s, Chittenden and Eastman was producing over 120 lines of mattresses and upholstered furniture. In the 1940s, both Chittenden and the Eastman family stepped down and sold their stock to company employees. The Chittenden and Eastman name carried on, as did the company’s quality craftsmanship.
Today, Chittenden and Eastman continues the tradition created by its founders. Most commonly known as Eastman House, the company leaders believe it takes time to make a great mattress with the right combination of time-tested craftsmanship, quality materials, modern technology, and precision engineering. They strive to meet the expectations of the modern-day customer.
